watery remains of U576 off ocracoke

7 year search located sunken sub.

The Outer Banks was on the front lines of the Battle for the Atlantic in WWII as German submarines ravaged allied shipping within sight of the coast. U576 sank with all hands on board after a savage night of action in 1942. NOAA, the UNC Coastal Studies Institute and the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management located the sub in 2016. The UK Daily Mail has this story, which is a fascinating place to start.

(If this kind of thing is really your cup of tea, then you are going to love this follow up story from the Washington Post: just this year a National Oceanic and Atmospheric (NOAA) laser survey has revealed the boat in high-resolution detail. Read that story and see the images HERE.)

Map shows where the wreckage was discovered off Ocracoke Island.

“A German U-Boat has been spotted 30 miles off the coast of North Carolina – 72 years after it sank during a Nazi mission.

Wreckage of the submerged U-576 submarine was discovered by sonar near Ocracoke on August 24, [2016] seven years after the search began.

The vessel went down during a battle off the Outer Banks on 15 July, 1942, during the Second World War.”
