Town Offers Hope to Older Motels

At one time mom and pop motels lined the beaches of the Outer Banks. For a number of reasons these treasures of a time gone by are disappearing. The town of Nags Head, realizing them may lose something precious is taking steps to keep them. Michelle Wagner, writing for the Outer Banks Voice has the story.

In an effort to preserve some of its character and past, the Town of Nags Head is considering text amendments to its zoning ordinance that would give non-conforming hotels some breathing room when it comes to expanding, reconstructing or altering their structures.

The Planning Board on August 18 voted 6-1 to recommend that the Nags Head Board of Commissioners approve the changes to the Unified Development Ordinance, with Planning Board Member Gary Ferguson casting the dissenting vote. The commissioners are expected to consider the recommendation following a public hearing at its Oct. 7 meeting.
