powerful storm batters hatteras, obx

Nor’easter exiting after making its presence felt.

The potent coastal storm that has ravaged shorelines from North Carolina to Maine, is subsiding, but is still powerful. The wind switched direction on Sunday, pushing ocean water over NC 12 up and down the OBX. This on top of soundside flooding and road closures–Hatteras Island was hit especially hard–but thankfully nothing like the destruction happening in the upper Northeast. Sam Walker, writing for the Outer Banks Voice has the details.

“Winds from the massive coastal storm in the North Atlantic that has been whipping the Outer Banks since Friday have turned from the north, pushing ocean waters through and over dunes at oceanfront hot spots and disrupting travel along parts of N.C. 12.

Cape Hatteras schools will be closed on Monday for all staff and students, while the other Dare County Schools will operate on a normal schedule.

“North winds will remain gusty today along the coast, however they will be weaker than yesterday,” said Bob Fredrick, a forecaster at the National Weather Service office in Newport-Morehead City.”
