amazing night: time-lapse video of obx

Motion time-lapse captures the OBX night sky. Daniel Lowe with Star Mountain Media created this captivating time-lapse video nearly 10 years ago, but it is timeless. It’s an heart-stopping look at one of the Outer Banks’ best features: a night sky uninhibited by skyscrapers or light pollution. It features the Cape Hatteras light in Buxton, a wildfire burning in Stumpy Point and Jennette’s Pier, and you also get a zippy trip across Oregon Inlet. [be sure to click on the four arrows in the right hand corner to view the video...

hermine leaves her mark on the obx

Hermine may just be a tropical storm, but she sure has packed a wallop on the Outer Banks. Kip Tabb writing for the North Beach Sun took his camera out this morning, got some pictures and put his thoughts down about the storm. Reports are rolling in now from Hatteras and Ocracoke that aren’t great– lots of flooding from the high winds on the back side. This short video was around 10am shot during the eye of the storm. Fairly calm winds and no rain- for a bit. Then the feisty back wall came through with gusts clocked at 80 mph at...

just another perfect storm

The Perfect Storm 2015 is winding down, at least that’s what the forecasters are telling us—that by Wednesday the seas will calm down, the rains will go away and the winds will drop off to a manageable 15-20 mph. It’s a storm we’ll probably remember. Sure, we dodged a hurricane, but this storm has lingered for days, the ocean has been assaulting the shoreline and the rains have been torrential—almost 5” in four days in Buxton and just a little bit less north of Oregon Inlet. Ocracoke village is swamped with soundside flooding and and visitor...

filmed on the obx: the moped diaries

We just love a ‘local guy makes it big’ story over here, so we’ve been cheering for Tyler Nilson ever since we watched his short film The Moped Diaries, and then saw it go viral online. This awesome little nugget of a movie was filmed entirely on the Outer Banks with a local cast, was an official selection by nine international film festivals, and was nominated for Best Short at Raindance.  The Moped Diaries is an age old story of love lost and courage found, Colington Island style. Want to see more? Well, here’s the...

dr. beach talks rip currents

Not many people know who Dr. Stephen Leatherman is, but everybody knows “Dr. Beach”, the author of the annual 10 Best Beaches Report. As the Director of the Laboratory for Coastal Research at Florida International University , Leatherman takes on much more serious topics than which beach has the softest sand or best amenities, and in this great video he takes a look at rip currents:  how to identify them and what to do if you are caught in one. An interesting and informative video that we think should be watched by EVERYONE who...

CAT competition huge success, mahoney crowned champion

The 2014 SailNC A-Class North American Championship came to the OBX and competitors were treated to great conditions, a fantastic course in the Croatan Sound at the Dare County Airport and lots of Outer Banks hospitality. The A-Class are 18′ catamarans and when the winds picked up to 8-12 knots on the last day of competition,  the boats were skimming across the waves. SailNC, a North Carolina Corporation founded in 2013, is a non-profit, 501(c)3 (status pending) organization. Its mission is “The establishment of North Carolina’s coast...

adventure is headed our way in may!

Coming at the end of May–First Flight Adventure Park–the first Outer Banks aerial adventure park! Nestled along the Roanoke Sound just south of Pamlico Jack’s Restaurant around MP 16 in Nags Head, the ropes and towers already look pretty challenging, in a good way!  This video from Doug Douglas is a first look and a good laugh. “The Aerial Park is designed for all ages and skill levels, so bring the whole family along for the adventure of a lifetime! 48 elements ranging from 12-50 feet above the ground, will test your...
