Fresh crabs, good music and great wine at Crabdaddy this year
Crabdaddy is all about celebrating the bounty of the sea and land… done, of course, the Outer Banks way.
The setting is perfect. The vines of Sanctuary Vineyards surround the The Cotton Gin in Jarvisburg, so what better place for September festivities than under the pines on the north end of the store?
OK—admittedly Jarvisburg isn’t exactly the Outer Banks, but it’s close enough that John Wright, vineyard manager, and his Sanctuary Vineyards gets a pass.
The weather Saturday was picture-book fall perfection; bright sunshine, temperatures in the low 80s and gentle breeze.
All that was needed after that was crabs, and a lot of them, beer and local wine.
The crabs came courtesy of Hunter Stuart from I Got Your Crabs, down in Kitty Hawk; he’s a commercial fisherman, so the catch was a fresh as it gets. He also caught more than he thought he would, so John was able to up his ticket sales from 500 to 700.
There was, of course beer to go with the crabs, but honestly the wines that Sanctuary Vineyards have been producing get better every year and they were definitely the way to go.
The music was great as well. Trae Pierce and the T-stones bill themselves as a rock, hip-hop, funk band and that pretty much sums them up. Really talented, really fun.
Since we’re talking about the fall bounty and harvest, we should mention one of the most fun events of the day—grape stomping. Proving conclusively that machines are better than feet for extracting grape juice, teams of two hopped into barrels filled with wine grapes and stomped around trying to fill giant chalices. Perfect for the day.
